Our History
Our firm was formed in October 2003 by Elizabeth Starrs, Michael Mihm and Richard Caschette. When Elizabeth Starrs and Michael Mihm, long-time partners at a large Denver defense firm, decided to form their own boutique trial firm to focus on plaintiff-side business and legal malpractice litigation, they asked their good friend, Rich Caschette, a former First Assistant United States Attorney, to join them. The firm was immediately successful as Starrs Mihm & Caschette LLP. Click here to read Elizabeth Starr's article in Litigation about starting in a boutique litigation firm.
In July 2006, Ms. Starrs became president of the Colorado Bar Association, for which she served a one-year term.
In 2006, Elizabeth Starrs, Michael Mihm and Rich Caschette were named as a “Colorado Super Lawyer” for business litigation in the inaugural edition of Colorado Super Lawyers® by the publishers of 5280 magazine. Ms. Starrs and Mr. Mihm have also been named as Colorado Super Lawyers® for each edition since. Beginning in 2008, Ms. Starrs was named by Colorado Super Lawyers® as one of the Top 50 Super Lawyers in Colorado, in any area of practice, and one of the Top 25 Women Super Lawyers in Colorado. In 2011, Ms. Starrs was named by Colorado Super Lawyers® as one of the Top 10 Lawyers in Colorado in any field of practice. Ms. Starrs and Mr. Mihm have since both been selected for inclusion in The Best Lawyers in America®, Ms. Starrs for Business Litigation and Mr. Mihm for Legal Malpractice Law-Plaintiff.
In July 2008, we changed our name to Starrs Mihm & Pulkrabek LLP when Colorado Governor Bill Ritter appointed Rich Caschette to the bench in the District Court of the Eighteenth Judicial District of Colorado. Mr. Caschette is now a trial judge of the Douglas County District Court.
In January 2010, we changed our name to Starrs Mihm LLP. We also joined the International Society of Primerus Law Firms, an invitation-only international alliance of more than 190 select law firms in more than 135 cities around the world.
In 2010, Michael Mihm was elected an officer of the Colorado Trial Lawyers Association, the principal organization for plaintiff and consumer lawyers in Colorado.
In 2009, Elizabeth "Booka" Smith and Elizabeth "Betsy" Hyatt became partners in the firm. In May 2011, we were joined by Susan Bernhardt, one of Colorado's most prominent women litigators, and then a partner in one of Denver's oldest and largest law firms, Sherman & Howard, LLC. Ms. Bernhardt is now Of Counsel with the firm.
